Senior economist in the Chief Economist Team of the European Commission, Directorate-General for Competition. He joined DG Competition in January 2000. From 2000 until 2004 he worked in the Commission's Merger Task Force (MTF), the department responsible for merger control. He was also took part in drafting the EU Horizontal Merger Guidelines, which were published by the Commission in 2004. In June 2004 he became a member of the Chief Economist Team. Since then, his activities have focused on the area of state aid control (control of subsidies to the private sector, with a view to limit distortions of competition and trade within the EU). Ph.D. in Economics from Tilburg University.
